Millions of Mysterious Purple Creatures Wash Ashore in Hawaii

A mass invasion of O’ahu’s south shores by millions of tiny purple creatures has biologists and beach goers scratching their heads.. and watching where they step.

Last weekend, an onslaught of mysterious little monsters began washing up on some Hawaiian beaches, and the mysterious pea-sized creatures couldn’t readily be identified by biologists.

“The lifeguard called and asked what these things were because she had reports of surfers were actually have these things crawl up on their boards and onto them,”Norton Chan, a Waikiki Aquarium Biologist, told KHON2 News.

While the efforts to figure out just what the little guys are have so far proved fruitless, Chan believes they may be related to a the local avatar crab, just in a size that people are not used to seeing, such as a larval stage. He and other biologists from the area have been roaming the shores of O’ahu trying to preserve as many of the creatures as possible in an effort to see exactly what they grow into. So far, they don’t even have a way to tell how big they’re even going to get.

“There’s a lot of things we don’t know about the ocean so any opportunity like this is a great learning experience,” Chan said.

At least by the time they’ve turned into gigantic, nuclear-induced Godzilla monsters, we should have had enough time to figure out how to kill them.

For more on the little critters, including some video, you can head over to Business Insider, which is honestly just a weird outlet to be covering this in the first place.

Very cool, hehe, maybe they are mutant critters from Japan, should check them for radiation levels. Might be seeing more weird thing washing up in the pacific now that its radioactive. (Haida Gwaii, radioactive seaweed).

I cannot believe that even the BIOLOGISTS are stumped by this !!! Has anyone ever watched the Discovery Channel and watched how millions of crab larvae float out into the ocean by the millions and stay that way until turning into whatever species they are from ? This is so natural and the PRO’s are stumped ? Anybody – look up ‘floating crab larvae in the ocean’ and see what you learn !!

07/20/2012 at 7:48 PM do realize they know they are crabs and are stumped as to what species they are, correct?

I live in Hilo, Big Island. The news here shows the biologists holding them as they curl into tiny pea shaped balls and they clearly state that they ‘do not know’ what they are !! Kinda funny, really. BUT—if those suckers grow up to be as big as the King crab in Alaska —-???? Luau !!!!!!!

Purple ? Maybe they are the same as the Christmas Island crabs which would explain maybe they want to wash ashore, since that’s where they grow up… Maybe somebody dropped one off, they have tons of eggs, one or two might just do it.

Definitely know which sister is spreading the cheer — and perhaps a lot more !! HEY — WAIT A MINUTE !!!! Wasn’t she in Hawaii a month or so ago ?? And wasn’t she swimming on the very beach where the “crabs” were found?? Answer: YES SHE WAS !!!

Those are most definately extraterrestrial space crabs. I have seen these little guys before. They come from the bearded clam nebula. My advice would be run far and fast.
