A photo of a strange creature posted online this week spurred a massive discussion and prompted the internet to wonder if the Chupacabra was vacationing in Jersey.

Reddit user “Diabolicism” uploaded the picture with the title “what the hell is this animal!? (Spotted in NJ)” and it wasn’t long before the thread went crazy with possible theories. Some thought it was a gargoyle, some thought it was Snooki, and others even went so far as to say it was a photo of El Chupacabra himself.

After a bit of digging, internet sleuths discovered that the mysterious photograph of the strange creature wasn’t actually captured in New Jersey, but rather was snapped in a back yard somewhere in Oklahoma.

On May 6th the original picture of the critter was posted to the Wild Care Oklahoma Facebook page, along with the photo of the “gargoyle’s” front. Turns out, the freaky looking critter is just a hairless squirrel.

“She’s a squirrel, she lives in a ball of mulch in my garden shed (or at least she did this winter). Now all she seems to be interested in is burying pecans in my garden,” photographer Ed Brookshire said.

Unfortunately, Reddit users didn’t take follow suit and bury Diabolicism for straight up lying about the image.
