Is poutine worth traveling light years for? Apparently I’m not the only one who thinks so, because this year Canadians reported witnessing just over 2000 separate UFO encounters, nearly twice the total from last year.
The discovery was conducted by Manitoba based society UFOlogy and the report published this week, and what they discovered was pretty interesting. According to the survey a total of 1,981 UFOs were spotted in Canada in 2012, which was an enormous leap from the recorded 1,004 in 2008.
Ontario (represent!) leads up the list with nearly 40% of all UFO sightings in the entire country, though UFOlogy reports that Winnipeg might be a part of the extraterrestrial corridor. According to the survey Toronto, Calgary, Kelowna, Winnipeg and Vancouver are the top 5 UFO hotspots in across the country.
UFOlogy’s research coordinator, Chris Rutkowski explained to the press this week that nearly 10% of the Canadian population believes in UFOs, while only seven and a half percent of those reported cases remain unexplained after a bit of investigation. He is, however, stumped by the recent rise in sightings.
“We thought that they had plateaued or peaked a few years ago when there were about 1,000 cases reported in Canada,” he told CTV News. “But last year they jumped 100 per cent: 2,000 reports in Canada alone.”
Some say there are simple explanations for the rise in sightings, blaming secret military bases and top-secret aircraft trials. Rutkowski says conducting interviews and research has answered away most of the sightings, though some of the close encounters just can’t be scientifically explained.
Either way UFOlogy will continue to collect data and the survey will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year, all the while collecting answers for believers and skeptics to ponder.
So, what do you think about the rise in Canadian UFO sightings? Are extraterrestrials just really big fans of Pizza Pizza and hockey? Or is Canada’s government starting to play with drones? Share your thoughts with us on Facebook, on twitter @WhoForted, or in the comments below!
