Saudi police made an strange arrest last weekend, apprehending a man they referred to as a “sorcerer” with a knack for healing the sick and hunting down and killing spirits known as the Djinn.

According to a report in the Saudi Gazette, the arrest was made at 9AM on Saturday by the Al-Habil Police in conjunction with the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (Hai’a), who found the wizard in his home, minding his own business.

During the raid, the police seized numerous copies of books relating to witchcraft, paraphernalia relating to sorcery, and even two wild wolves that the warlock used in his Djinn hunting business. It’s believed that the wolves served to eat the evil spirits, almost like a low budget containment cell from Ghostbusters.

Belief in Djinn is widespread in middle eastern countries, and unlike the demons known in Western culture, these beings are believed to have free will, meaning that they aren’t always evil, but when they are, they’re downright nasty. Because of this, many people who believe they are being pestered by evil Djinn hire supernaturally-inclined professionals to dispose of them.

In Saudi Arabia, the crime of sorcery is not well-defined, and leads to closed-door court proceedings that have more than once been seen as a violation of civil rights. Often, the punishment for the crime is execution.
